Walking the Faery Way

I have always been drawn to the faery realms. Even as a child, my world was full of bugs, injured birds, frogs and tree top vistas. I didn't have the words to explain it back then, but I was sharing the world of nature spirits.

After many long years and winding paths through life, I find myself right back where I started in many ways. Yet, as I recently discovered, I have been walking the Faery Way all along.

It was (naturally I suppose) at a Samhain spiral dance led by Starhawk, that I met my faery guide in the Underworld. I asked her, once and for all, to help me define my life mission - the thing I had come here to do. She seemed surprised that I had to ask.

"You have come here to teach the Faery Way," she said quite simply.

Of course! It was so obvious, and yet so profound. That one statement defined all the years of seeking and searching, trial and error, dreaming and manifesting. It was like hearing my note resonating on the harp strings of the Universe.

I realized at once that I might be labeled as a "nut case" if I started spouting off about faeries amongst the mainstream people I knew. Most of them have shut down their ability to perceive anything beyond the solid material world. Yet they are precisely the ones who need the Faery Way most of all. So I've been teaching the Faery Way without talking about faeries at all.

Even so, I treasure the souls who see beyond the veil. My kinfolk. With you I can share the knowing that underlies every act and thought of my life. I can share the truth about faeries!

The Faery Way Made Clear

It all made sense to me in one moment, but you may still be wondering, what IS the Faery Way? It's funny, but the Faery Way could almost be the platform of the American Green Party. I suppose the faeries have been instrumental in inspiring our politics!

To be more precise, there are certain things the faeries value above all else:

Honesty
Beauty
Compassion
Respect for Nature
Cooperation

These values come through in many ways. Usually the first thing we think of when we think of faeries is nature. The Faery Way is all about nurturing nature. When we align ourselves with nature by living in harmony with plants, animals, and each other, we are walking the Faery Way.

Compost is Faery Gold - compost your food and garden waste. (If you don't have room for a compost pile, you can set up a worm bin inside or outside.)

Organic farming and gardening heals the soil and safeguards the lives of bees, butterflies, birds, frogs, turtles, fish - and you and me! Insist on organic products.

Biodegradable cleaning supplies and toiletries keep toxins from accumulating in water, soil, air - and your body. Read the labels!

When you walk the Faery Way, you are naturally in harmony with Earth, all life, and other people. You will probably find yourself moving toward a whole foods, vegetarian, vegan, and/or raw foods lifestyle. It is the natural human diet.

Compassion for animals means we cannot exploit animals in factory farm conditions for our economic benefit. We feel their distress. Nor can we randomly destroy animal habitats for our own benefit. We give animals equal rights.

Compassion for humans means we cannot support war. We support whole natural foods, especially for children, because whole foods foster healthy, balanced, and peaceful humans.

Compassion for Earth means we find ways to build without strip mining and deforestation. We find ways to travel without polluting our air. We find ways to farm without poisoning the land and stripping the soil.

Faeries love beauty, song, and dance. Everything they make is exquisitely beautiful, and they do it with joy and laughter.

Pick up trash - especially plastic that will not break down for hundreds of years. In fact, avoid using non-recyclable plastics at all.

Clear the clutter in your life - your desk, garage, closets, etc.

Create beauty in your home, yard, and office. Start small and expand slowly, appreciating each step of the way.

Learn to draw, paint, sing, or dance. Share music and the arts with your friends. Hold dance parties with whole foods feasts.

Faery healing is energy healing. The faeries work with the energy of plants and stones to heal animals, humans, and ecosystems. We can use the same energy to heal ourselves and others. In fact, it is essential to all true healing.

This is the honesty the faeries seek to awaken in us - our knowing of the perfection of life, even when appearances seem to reflect imperfection. They see the perfection, even while we dump toxins into the rivers and air, even while we bomb each other, and strip our soils of nutrients.

Through it all, they can see the perfect template of nature and they continue to manifest perfect trees and flowers, perfect wolves and frogs and babies.

They are showing us how to do it in every moment. All we have to do is look around and notice the perfection, and honor the faeries for their ceaseless work and play that uplifts our world and our lives.
